When Is a Tooth Extraction Recommended?
Tooth extractions are recommended when keeping a tooth may cause more harm than benefit.
Common situations include:
- Severe tooth decay that cannot be restored with a dental filling or crown
- Infection or abscess that threatens surrounding teeth or bone
- Overcrowding that affects how adult teeth are coming in
- A baby tooth that is not falling out on its own and is blocking permanent teeth
- Dental trauma that damages a tooth beyond repair
The Importance of Baby Teeth
Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, they play an important role in guiding adult teeth into place. When a tooth is removed early, we may recommend monitoring the space or using a space maintainer to help keep everything on track as your child grows.

Our Approach to Extractions
Removing a tooth is never the first option. Treatment decisions are based on what will benefit your child long-term and what they can comfortably tolerate, with a focus on keeping care as simple and positive as possible.
Sedation & Comfort Options
Most children do very well during tooth extractions with gentle coaching, encouragement, and a child-friendly approach. We take time to explain things in ways children can understand and help them feel comfortable every step of the way.
Before an extraction, we place a flavored numbing jelly on the gums before using “sleepy juice” (local anesthesia) to help the tooth and surrounding area take a nap. For children with significant anxiety or more complex needs, IV sedation may be considered. Every recommendation is made carefully, with safety and your child’s comfort as the top priority.
One of the best ways to prepare your child is to keep the conversation simple and positive. There is no need to explain the details of the procedure ahead of time. Our team will guide your child through the experience using kid-friendly language, encouragement, and plenty of reassurance along the way.

FAQ
When can my child return to school after tooth extraction?
Most children can return to school the next day. If your child had a more involved procedure or sedation, a little extra rest may be recommended.
Is tooth extraction painful for kids?
The area is numbed during the procedure so your child should not feel pain. Some mild soreness afterward is normal and can usually be managed with simple at-home care.
Can kids get dry socket after tooth extraction?
Dry socket is very uncommon in children, but it can happen in rare circumstances. Following aftercare instructions, like avoiding straws and allowing the area to heal undisturbed, helps reduce the risk.
What can kids eat after tooth extraction?
Soft foods are best for the first day or two. Options like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and smoothies help protect the area while it heals.
How long does it take for a child’s mouth to heal after an extraction?
Most children heal quickly after a tooth extraction. Initial healing usually takes a few days, with the area continuing to improve over one to two weeks. We will provide clear aftercare instructions to help support a smooth recovery.
